Finding Your Balance - Brian Mayne

Friday 4th September 2009

By ‘Goal Mapping’ founder, Brian Mayne

Wo-Man: It is said that men are from Mars and Women from Venus.

In truth there’s a little of each in all of us, and it’s when we find the balance between the two that we’re at our best.

Our brain is in two halves joined by a cord. The right side is known as the Female-Brain; it’s emotional, intuitive, creative and gifted with imagination. The left is the Male-Brain; it is logical, rational, ordered, and is designed for strategy.

From birth till age 5 our brain is naturally balanced - we lead with the right through imagination and then manage our tasks through the left with logic. As we get older, learning to read and studying for exams all strengthen our left Male-brain but do less for our right Female-brain.

This is particularly true for men who are encouraged to study left-brain subjects involving maths and logic and work in a left brain profession. As the left brain grows dominant it shows in our personality as we become more un-emotional, closed and dry.

However, at any time we can re-balance our brain and with it our self and our life. Finding the natural balance between your Male and Female brains helps you lead your life with imagination and passion, while managing through logic and reason to create higher levels of effectiveness.

Brain Gym
The brain is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it grows; the less you use it the weaker it becomes. If we are unbalanced to the right we are normally creative but lack the left brain discipline to get our ideas put into practise. If we are unbalanced to the left we never have our own ideas and spend our lives waiting for others to tell us where to go and what to do. Success lies in the middle.

If you believe you’re left brain dominant, try these exercises:

  1. Painting and drawing are great for working the right brain muscle
  2. Modelling, arts and crafts
  3. Visualising and mental imaging

If you think your right brain is stronger, try these:

  1. Switch off the calculator and make an effort with mental arithmetic
  2. Invent and play some counting games
  3. Keep and use a To-Do list

If you believe you’re already balanced, try these ‘whole-brain’ exercises.

  1. Sudooko - the numbers for your left brain, the patterns work your right brain
  2. Cryptic Crosswords work in the same way; exercising both sides of our brain
  3. Learning an instrument or listening to classical music

The advantages of achieving brain balance are endless and essential.
